Mangaratiba is a small port in Rio that has an attractive setting with the mountain in the background. A striking bay with small fishing boats and a glorious 18th century church dominates the most important square. This seaside village is where tourists can take a ferry to ‘Ilha Grande’. Complete with isles, beaches and forests, Mangaratiba is growing to be a great vacation spot with Itacuruca, Muriqui and Ibicui being its important boroughs.
To reach Mangaratiba you have to take the ‘BR-10 highway’ either by bus or else a car. The serene environs of Managratiba are known for its ethnicity and it is a protected environmental reserve. A well-known resort called ‘Rio das Pedras’ is set amidst lush greenery and at the periphery of a beach. The colonial style mansions found here mingle very well with the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforests. There is a private beach in this resort that is 2000 feet long with all the facilities such as showers and loungers.
Enclosed by mist-covered mountains and lush green vegetation, Itacuruca is a serene place in Mangaratiba. Detached from the township by a waterway is the ‘Ilha de Itacuruca’ which is the biggest string of isles extending into the inlet. Further down is ‘Ilha de Jaguanum’. Both the islands have splendid beaches. Schooners sail in the region of the inlet and also to the isles. Sailing and Yachting are popular here.
You will not get a wide choice of hotels in Mangaratiba. Nevertheless, those available are good and your money’s worth. Situated on ‘Rua Maria Augusta Lopes 11’ is Hotel Mendonca which offers a wide choice of services that includes a bar, restaurant, laundry, wireless internet and even a tour guide who can speak to you in English.
