All things come to a standstill in Rio during the Carnival. While companies close down and shops shut early, the streets of Rio turn into one big party zone with street parties and samba parades providing awe inspiring entertainment for a million people that attend the Carnival every year. Samba parades are what the Carnival is really all about and are best witnessed at the Darcy Ribeiro Sambadrome. For those attending the Carnival and for the millions around the globe watching it on television, this is a chance to learn about the true culture of the Brazilians.

The 2013 Rio Carnival begins on February 8th and ends on Fat Tuesday, the 12th of February, 2013. However, once the champion of the Special Group samba parade is decided, they will be back to stamp their authority at the Sambadrome on Saturday, 16th February 2013. The Carnival commences during the peak of summer, with the vivacious samba dancers and their troupe making the stadium even hotter. King Momo kicks off the celebrations along with his shimmery queen after which the Children’s Parade begins at the Sambadrome on Carnival Friday, February 8th. The opening event by the kids from the Samba Schools can be as exciting as the main events. You can watch the future kings and queens of samba put up a grand show of their own, which sets the tempo for the coming nights at the stadium.
The Access Group that aspires to make it to the big league in the following year take center stage on Saturday, February 9th, 2013, while the top 12 in the Special Group set the Sambadrome alight on Sunday and Monday, vying for the top coveted title of champions.

The magic and thrill of the Carnival originates from the production of elaborate costumes to the choreography of the costume bearers. The residents of the favelas are deeply involved in the production of magnificent floats, costumes, and every element involved in the staging of the samba parade. Samba schools open their doors to visitors throughout the year and hold parties as early as November, where you can get a sneak preview of what their samba parade may be like at the 2013 Rio Carnival. The champions are decided by a panel of 40 judges who are strategically located across the Sambadrome, awarding points to each samba school for their song, theme, overall performance, the flag bearer, samba dancers, drummers, and several other categories, who all put up a riveting performance for their samba school. Here is your chance to watch the best samba dancers and musicians from Mangueira, Salgueiro, Mocidade, and Sao Clemente, and many others putting up a spectacular performance that will remain as some of the most memorable moments of your lifetime.
If you traveling to Rio for the samba parade remember that it requires a bit of preparation on your part too. It is prudent to book your flight tickets and Carnival tickets in advance. There are a choice of seating arrangements at the Sambadrome including grandstands, open boxes of frisas (which many say are the best seats in the house) and luxury suites or camarotes, where dinner and drinks are included along with other privileges. Planning your Carnival activities ahead will allow you to sample a variety of entertainment which includes the samba parade at the Sambadrome, Carnival balls, and street parties.
