Copacabana Beach - The Place to Be

The Copacabana beach is the most happening place in all of Rio and a place that every tourist visits when they are in town. The Carioca spirit is most evident in Copa with the young, old, rich and poor equally immersed in the eternal party that brings this beach to life. The two mile long Copacabana beach is close to all the attractions in Rio as well as the Ipanema beach.

Copacabana is a paradise for surfers and beach lovers. It is well known for its excellent surf and on a hot sunny day the beach is abuzz with people and activity. Small bars that are set up under umbrellas offer inexpensive drinks and Caipirinhas, a local alcoholic beverage. Capoeira, a Brazilian martial arts form is also practiced by trained performers and is a treat to watch. Footvolley, which is a combination of football and volleyball originated in Rio and Copacabana, is no stranger to this sport.

The Barracas or beach bars that are set up in the evening bring Copacabana to life. The Copacabana Palace Hotel is a luxury hotel and worth a visit even if you are a budget traveler. A cup of tea in the evening can be enjoyed with the view of the Sugar Loaf and Corcovado Mountains. Forte de Copacabana, a former military establishment has been converted to a cultural center and is open to visitors. Being at the tip of the beach, it offers a spectacular view of Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon.
