Gavea is noted for its ancient buildings that reveal the culture of the city. 'Parque da Cidade' also identified as 'City Park' covers a huge area. It has lush green gardens and exotic flora. You can also have a relaxed evening beside the clean lakes and the greenery.

This fabulous garden was at first a private mansion. Here you'll find the 'Museu Historico da Cidade', which displays relics and other details that trace Rio's history since 1565. Gavea also boasts of the 'Instituto Moreira Salles' where exhibitions are held regularly. You can view more than 80,000 old snapshots of Rio in this museum.

Outdoor Fun around Gavea

There is plenty of entertainment found in Gavea. One of them is the 'Hipodromo da Gavea' which is the race track. 'Jockey Club' is the other name for it. Races take place at night on Fridays as well as Mondays and in the weekends at daytime.

Gavea is home to a huge mall called 'Shopping de Gavea' which has more than 220 stores. You can get anything under the sun from books and furnishings to clothes and antiques in this mall. If you wish to buy some rare souvenirs, head to the 'Santos Dumont Square'. The antique fair is held here every Sunday.

The Planetarium in Gavea is quite literally a star attraction. It has a180-degree movie screen which is said to be the first in all of South America. Further, it has all the technology required to transform the dome into a dark starry sky. You can definitely head here with the entire family in tow.

Bars and Eateries

Gavea provides several eating places both big and small. 'Zero Zero' is an elegant restaurant and bar that offers Brazilian cuisine with a touch of Asian and also Mediterranean flavors. It's ideal to start the evening with supper at 'Braseiro da Gavea' which serves inexpensive food such as steak, pot roast and fried chicken.

The 'Guimas' is a restaurant which is more than 20 years old. It offers exclusive dishes and has a wide selection of wines from Portugal. Eateries that sell snacks are in plenty in Gavea. The 'Bacalhau do Rei' is noted for its fish croquettes and 'Chez Anne' is famous for its delectable fudge.

The Hip Nightclubs and Bars

Gavea has a pulsating nightlife. 'Zero Zero' at night becomes a nightclub which is otherwise a restaurant. The 'vodka bar' here is popular. 'Girl from Gavea', 'Boteco Espelunca' and 'Hipodromo' are some of the bars and clubs you shouldn't miss. The 'Santos Dumont Square' on Sunday nights is packed with students as the street party begins. All in all, you won't be disappointed with your trip to Gavea.
