The Mountain Of Sugar Loaf, In Urca Is One Of The Most Visited Places Of Rio.

After Corcovado and the Christ the Redeemer statue, Sugar Loaf Mountain or Pão de Açúcar is what Rio is famous for. The 400-meter mountain is part of the Carioca Mountain range that offers a splendid view of the city and the Atlantic Ocean. A cable car was built in 1912 to take people to top, and continues to bring millions to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets over the city. The mountain was one of the locations for the shooting the James Bond thriller, Moonraker, with a fight scene atop a cable car.

The trip to the top of Sugar Loaf is a two-step journey by cable car that costs around U$ 22 for a return trip. The first leg takes you to from the foot of the mountain at Praia Vermelha to Morro da Urca at a height of 220 meters. The three-minute trip in the cable car offers you 360 degree panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Guanabara Bay. Each cable car has a capacity of 65 passengers and run every twenty minutes at full capacity. Trips begin from 08:10 am to Morro da Urca. The second leg of the journey is from Morro da Urca to the top of Sugar Loaf, which is 396 meters above sea level. The last cable car trip from Praia Vermelha to Morro da Urca is at 8:00 pm. For the convenience of tourists there are elevators and restrooms that are well equipped for visitors with special needs on both legs of the trip.

While views from the cable car can be most exhilarating, the 1st leg up to Morro da Urca is easy to hike during the day along a tree-shaded trail that loops around to the ocean side of the mountain. Make a late afternoon trip to Sugar Loaf and you can catch a beautiful sunset as Rio begins to light up early evening. There are plenty of stalls to grab a bite and drinks while you soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings. From black-tufted marmosets to vultures and the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks, words are not enough to express the beauty of the region, with a chaotic city of millions of people less than a mile away.

Getting to the foot of the hill at Praia Vermelha is easy by road. You can catch a cab or bus from Copacabana or Ipanema. While bus no. 511 plies from Copacabana to Priaia Vermelha the return journey is by 512. Since the distance is short from Copacabana, a taxi is an inexpensive option.
