Via Australis: 3 Nights: Ushuaia to Punta Arenas


Departure: Saturdays

Wednesday: Depart Punta Arenas
Check in starts on Saturday at 1pm until 6pm at Cruceros Australis office in Punta Arenas. Boarding time is from 5pm to 7pm. Departure is scheduled for 8pm after the crew introduction and a welcome cocktail. Passengers must be on board one hour prior to departure. (D)

Thursday: Marinelli, the first of the glaciers. Plus Tucket Islet, wildlife galore!
Located in Ainsworth Bay, in the midst of the Darwin Range, in the distance, one can see the enormous wall of this ice giant of more than 40 meters high. Landing on the beach we embark on a short walk in the silent forest that ends at a beaver dam. Our guides elaborate on the local ecosystem and geography as we progress to a nearby promontory where we cherish at the sight of a large colony of sea-elephants and marine birds. In the afternoon, dolphins escort us to Tucker Islet, a paradise for Magellan penguins - visible from October to March - skua galls (predator birds) and large flocks of cormorants. As the day comes to an end we will sail along a rocky promontory inhabited by a colony of sea lions. (B,L,D)

Friday: Hiking in the Patagonian forest
When the ship enters the Garibaldi Inlet, we will try to get as near as possible to one of the most beautiful glaciers in our itinerary and observe the breathtaking mass of blue ice. We will also stop for a moment to observe the sea lions and wild ducks that herald our arrival. We disembark in one of the solitary beaches of the Garibaldi Inlet and start hiking deep into one of the wildest and thickest forests of Patagonia as our guides tell us about its flora, fauna and geography. In the afternoon we disembark at Pia Glacier and proceed on a short walk to an observation point, from where we will be able to appreciate the mountain range where the glaciers originate. We will take a few minutes to marvel at this incomparable scenery as we listed to the thunderous noises caused by the large masses of ice cracking and falling into the bay. (B,L,D)

Saturday: Ushuaia, the End of the World
This morning we arrive in Ushuaia, originally a penal colony and today the capital of the Argentinean province of Tierra del Fuego. Despite its faraway location, this is a fertile land of verdant forests, prairies colored by a myriad of flowers, snow-capped mountains, millenary glaciers and diverse wildlife.
